Golden Gate
When people mention Golden Gate, they think of America, boy are they wrong. The true beauty is formed in Southern Africa as the mountains rise above the skies and you are given the opportunity to join them on a drive of a lifetime.
The Journey
Our drive progressed as we headed from Giants Castle to Golden Gate.
On the base line of the Lesotho Border the Golden Gate offers mountainous views across the whole trip.
The drive alone is one that will stay with us forever.
The Free State
Whenever you speak to anyone about driving from Phalaborwa to Knysna, they always mention the straight roads of the Free State.
Naturally being the Braai Brothers, we like to do things differently.
As it was our route took us a slightly different way to most would have gone.
Golden Gate was a true vision of twisty turns as we climbed through the mountains. No straight roads for us!
Public Highway
Being a National Park we assumed you required your Wildcards to enter, but we were wrong.
From what we understand the route itself is part of the Public Highway with no fees to enter, as the route takes you from one side to the other.
Almost like the Nurburgring ring which many come to visit as a race track from far and wide, the public use it as an every day drive.
Worth The Drive?
What a silly question! The place was absolutely beautiful! The drive itself without the stops for photo opportunities was well worth it.
We drove through all sorts of terrain, all sorts of weather and the views were something dreams were made of.
We had heard all sorts of fantastic things about the Golden Gate, and can honestly agree with all of them.
The Views
The views cannot be described, and the photographs do not do enough talking to even begin to define the true beauty that can be seen from above!
We were advised on our journey about two loops we should take straight after the hill.
With this in mind, we took both and were fully delved in some true beauty with some fantastic photographic opportunities along the way.
A vulture restaurant is seen at the top of one of the view points, however sadly the carcuss was too old to offer any meat for anyone.
The stop off is worth it though to stretch your legs and also see the views.
Overall
The whole adventure took a turn when the weather changed, but we didn’t even batter an eye lid as we continued to try and pick up our jaws from the truly spectacular views from above.
This whole journey is so worth the excitement and drive along the way.
